A Jewelled Christmas Tree
We all admire a beautifully decorated Christmas tree – with its precious string of lights, stars and baubles But you might gape at this Christmas tree – kept in the lobby of the seven star Emirates Palace Hotel in Abu Dhabi.
Apart from the usual decoration items used in this 43 feet tall tree are an array of jewellery – necklaces, earrings, bracelets, watches and other accessories all carved in precious diamonds, emeralds, sapphires , gold and pearls! Each piece, totalling 180, neatly hangs around the branches of the tree, which has illuminated the glitzy lobby of the hotel.
The tree itself is worth $ 10,000, while the sparkling pieces of jewellery decorating it makes it a whopping $14million – which could well make this pricey tree a strong contender for the Guinness Records, as the world’s most expensive Christmas tree.
The idea for the tree was hatched by the hotel’s marketing department – according to general manager Hans Olbertz, the hotel always had a tree put up during Christmas time, but wanted something “different” this year.
Though Islam is the official religion of the state – Christmas is celebrated by both Christians and on-Christians alike.
