A compact car designed for the city, the REVOLTe has been ‘inspired’ by the legendary 2CV. However, Citroen head of advanced design, Carlo Bonzanigo, says the funky looking runabout is not a retro design. “I hope people will not perceive it as retro because it is far from it. There are familiar graphic elements but it is a modern, stylish design,” he says. Where the 2CV was plain and basic with unwieldy handling, Citroen says the Revolte is luxurious, colorful and high-tech, with lively dynamics. The REVOLTe’s rechargeable hybrid powertrain features a small-capacity combustion engine, combined with an electric motor. The vehicle can be used in electric-only mode and functions as a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) when its engine is switched off completely.

Wondering why I called this li’l one a chic car. Wait till you learn about the looks of this cutie. The Revolte features a ‘velvet sofa’ behind the driver’s seat. Apart from the luxurious interiors, the car has been styled to look as if it has eyelashes, mascara and eyebrows above the headlamps. The exterior paint and cabin highlights are glossy enough to give you an impression of a lipstick. Instead of wood paneling and plastic inside, the Revolte interior has woven black leather, thick crimson velvet and aluminum highlights.

Carlo further explains us the mystery behind the name of the car. He says the car is also designed to cast aside the gloom of the financial crisis. “It is also a revolt against sadness and non-investment,” he says. But Bonzanigo admits the car was specifically designed to steal the limelight from the German hometown heroes at Frankfurt. It was timed to coincide with the global launch of the new Citroen DS3, an upmarket competitor to BMW’s Mini. Can’t wait till it hits the road? Citroen plans to launch the Revolte by 2010.
