A Tibetan Mastiff called Yangtze River Number Two is believed to have broken the world record as the most expensive dog, having been sold to a Chinese woman for a reported four million yuan ($585,000). Mrs. Wang, the dog’s wealthy owner brought the dog home in great style and grandeur. She had apparently alerted her friends of her grand purchase and informed them about the time of arrival of the dog. Her wealthy friends then not only dispatched their Mercedes limousines to the airport but also arranged for local dog lovers to brandish welcome banners.

The Tibetan Mastiff is a very ancient breed and type of domestic dog originating with nomadic cultures of Central Asia, India. Due to the rarity of the original breed, the fact that it is a status symbol in China and the difficulty in finding one of show quality, a show quality pure bred fertile female is considered the most valuable and expensive of all dog breeds. There are also many stories doing rounds about how Mrs. Chang found and purchased this pricey Mastiff. One story claims Mrs Wang, had been travelling to the town of Yushu with a Tibetan mastiff that she already owned with a view to mating it with the famously pure-blooded hounds of that region. There she saw another Mastiff named White Root and knew she had to make it hers right away. Another story claims the woman had spent some years in the quest for the perfect Tibetan mastiff, and was satisfied that the dog she found in Yushu was it. Lavish displays of spending are not rare among China’s rich. But excesses of dog ownership have already started to become a source of tension.
