Vertu welcomes the Year of the Dragon with the Vertu Dragon Collection

With the Year of the Dragon upon us (for the uninitiated that is the Chinese New Year) , this 23rd of January 2012 promises to be a gala affair with the Dragon considered to be extremely lucky in the Chinese calendar. Companies have been quick to cash in to the fame of the dragon with Chinese dragon wristwatches as well as televisions. Its now the time of the Nokia owned Vertu to being out a collection of handsets that pay obeisance to the dragon.

The dragon collection shall include three styles – gold, silver and the ever classy black. The gold handset is covered with 18 carat yellow gold along with a 0.33 carat diamond set in the central key (which is made from white gold). The Dragon collection of Vertu has handsets whose backs look better then their fronts. The gold cell phone for instance has a golden dragon whose eyes are round diamonds while the dragon itself is made from fiery yellow gold. The dragon, we are told was exclusively reserved for the nobility in ancient China. The motifs which go on the cell phones are handmade and require about four artisans labouring over each motif for 2 days to get the degree of perfection that is seen on the phones. Each dragon has its gold scales cast for 8 hours and are then sent over to Switzerland for being stamped.

While the gold is my personal favorite, I simply cannot find fault with the silver steel one which is stunning thanks to the green emerald set in its center key. The dragon on this version bears emerald green eyes as well.

The black may seem to be the most common of the lot, but the truth is that this is a strictly limited edition version. Singapore, an important market for Vertu for instance has just three pieces of this Signature Dragon Black PVD Stainless Steel Ruby range. Each of the black phone is slated to sell for Singapore $26,800. The black phone gets red rubies as the eyes of the dragon as also for the central key of the phone.
