The auction took place on the occasion of Ali’s 70th birthday in Las Vegas which was attended by several celebrities and fighters. The gloves in question were the ones that Ali wore during a fight in 1965 against Floyd Patterson. The bidding was heated with the prime contenders for the gloves being Jerry Jones, owner of Dallas Cowboys against co-owner of the UFC, Lorenzo Fertitta. Jones placed a bid of $1 million only to be overturned by the winning bid of $1.1 million by Fertitta.
For a boxing great who the BBC has called as the Sports Personality of the Century, we think that the price is on the cheaper side. We are also grateful that for once the price has nothing to do with the item being encrusted with diamonds but instead due to the hard work , blood and sweat of this legend in the ring. The entire collections from the event will be going to charity.
Seen here is a video of the fight in 1965.
Ali has been honored by a special pen set by Montegrappa in recent times and is also considered the owner of a lucrative domain – www.allah.com which is listed for sale for a whopping $3 million dollars.
